SCHOFIELD, Wis. (WSAU) – Schofield will likely stay in the Everest Metro police department next year.

The City Council will get the final say when it meets at 7 p.m. But Mayor Allen Bremer said he’s been unable to find a better price by partnering with another municipality.

“There is some interest but the pricing seems to be about the same,” Bremer said.

Bremer had raised concerns this summer that the city wouldn’t be able to pay its $610,000 share of the department next year.

He’ll ask Chief Wally Sparks to reduce costs so that the city doesn’t have to pay that much.

The department also includes the village and town of Weston.

Bremer will ask leaders from the other communities to discuss modifying the merger agreement when the Everest Metro joint finance committee meets Thursday.

Among the changes Bremer wants to see are more specific terms about opting out of the department and setting a cap on how much communities should pay for police protection.

“We’d like to stay with the Everest Metro police department, but, if we can’t afford it, we’ll just have to look at the options that are out there,” Bremer said.

The City Council could also consider a public referendum to see what residents want for police protection.
